Trident of the Storm

This major artifact belongs to the goddess Varuna. It is a golden trident of otherwise simple design. In the hands of anyone but a divine spellcaster, it acts as a +7 everdancing lightning blast trident.

In the hands of a divine spellcaster, it gains the following powers:

• All spells with the lightning descriptor cast by the wielder are tripled--that is, two exact copies of the spell are generated by the trident. Each of the three copies can be targeted independently.
• The lightning damage of the trident is increased from 3d6 (6d6 on a critical) to 9d6 (18d6 on a critical).
• The wielder is treated as if proficient with a trident.
• The wielder uses her divine spellcasting ability score, rather than her Strength, to determine the hit and damage bonus of the trident's physical attack.
• The trident acts as a Rod of Greater Empowerment for lightning spells; thus, three times per day, the trident will empower any spell with the lightning descriptor. The two copies of the spell are also empowered (without counting against the daily limit of empowered spells).
